Why DeVry?

Benefits of a Bachelor's Degree

Earning a bachelor’s degree is a major milestone for your education. Having this additional credential on your resume can provide personal and professional benefits, such as:

Broader job possibilities:

Some positions in today’s workforce may require or recommend a bachelor’s degree. By earning one, you may meet the qualifications for a greater number of job opportunities.

Specialized knowledge:

A bachelor’s degree provides a broad foundation of knowledge and the opportunity to gain hands-on experience. Having this credential on your resume can let employers know that you are well-versed in your area of study.

Potential for higher earnings:

In many cases, workers who have earned a bachelor’s degree tend to have higher wages than those with only a high school diploma.

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that workers with at least a bachelor’s degree typically have median weekly earnings that are nearly double of those with only a high school diploma.

Personal growth:

Earning a bachelor’s degree can help improve your self-confidence and expand your overall understanding of the world. The communication, writing and critical thinking skills you can gain from a bachelor's program have the potential to be highly applicable in your personal life as well.

Job satisfaction:

A bachelor's can help give you the ability to pursue the career you’ve always wanted. Working in an industry you love and are knowledgeable about is a great way to improve your mindset about work.

Greater employability:

According to the BLS, bachelor's degree holders had an unemployment rate of only 2.2% in 2022. This is less than the 4% unemployment rate of those who have only a high school diploma or GED.

Comparison

Bachelor's Degree vs. Associate Degree

Both associate and bachelor’s degrees can be valuable preparation for your future but choosing which one to pursue ultimately depends on your personal goals and circumstances.

Program Length

In traditional terms, a bachelor’s degree is a four-year degree, while an associate degree is a two-year degree. However, with our year-round, 8-week class sessions, our Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, for example, can be earned in as little as 2 years and 8 months with an accelerated schedule and 4 years with a normal schedule. Normal schedule does not include breaks and assumes 2 semesters of year-round, full-time enrollment in 12-19 credit hours a semester per 12 month period. Accelerated schedule does not include breaks and assumes 3 semesters of year-round, full-time enrollment in 12-19 credit hours a semester per 12 month period.

Coursework & Skills

When deciding which degree to pursue, it is helpful to look at what you’ll learn from each program. An associate degree is a way to establish a basic set of skills in your area of interest. This can be a great first step if you want to add a credential to your resume in the near future.

A bachelor's degree, on the other hand, provides a deeper dive into business, management and technical skills, as well as your specified area of study. Core courses focus primarily on fundamental skills, while program-specific and specialized courses help you sharpen your skillset in your focused field of study.

Stackable Credits

At DeVry, many of our associate degree programs are designed to stack into a related bachelor's degree. If you choose to begin with an associate degree, you can apply the qualifying credit hours you’ve earned directly toward your bachelor's at DeVry when you're ready.2 Your Admissions Representative can help explain more based on the associate and bachelor’s degree programs you are interested in.

Accreditation Matters

DeVry is proud to be accredited by The Higher Learning Commission, www.hlcommission.org. Our Keller Graduate School of Management is included in this accreditation.

FAQs: Bachelor's Degrees

What is a bachelor's degree?

A bachelor’s degree is a college degree earned in a specific field of study, such as accounting or information technology. Some students earn a bachelor’s right after high school, while others spend time in the workforce or pursue an undergraduate certificate or associate degree before enrolling in a bachelor’s degree program.

Some fields, particularly those in business management and technology, may require a bachelor’s degree for entry. Other career paths may require this degree for higher-level positions such as management. A bachelor’s can stand on its own or serve as a steppingstone to a graduate degree such as a master’s or MBA. Visit this page for further information to answer the question, what is a bachelor’s degree.

How long does it take to earn a bachelor's degree?

Traditionally, a bachelor’s degree is considered to be a 4 year degree, but the actual time it may take you to complete the required number of semester-credit hours to earn a bachelor’s or any other degree depends on several factors. It could take you more or less time, depending on the program you choose, whether you have qualifying transfer credits from another academic institution and whether you are enrolled full-time or part-time. In some programs, you could gain credit for qualifying previous military training or professional certifications. As an example, our Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration can be earned in as little as 2 years and 8 months with an accelerated schedule, and 4 years with a normal schedule.

Do online bachelor's degrees say they were earned online?

At DeVry, your diploma indicates your year of graduation and program of study.

Why earn a bachelor's degree?

People earn bachelor’s degrees for many reasons. These credentials have the potential to provide the following benefits and more:

  • Add a higher-level credential to your resume
  • Help position yourself to pursue a promotion or transfer
  • Apply for jobs that require a bachelor’s degree
  • Prepare to pursue roles with increased earning potential
  • Gain specialized knowledge in a particular field of study
  • Expand your overall body of knowledge

How many credits are required for a bachelor's degree?

At DeVry, typically our bachelor's degree programs require a minimum of 120 credit hours for completion. Some areas of study may require more credits, though this will vary based on the specialization you choose.

What is the difference between a bachelor's degree vs. an associate degree?

A bachelor's degree is typically a longer, more in-depth and detailed program while an associate usually takes less time to complete and focuses on more entry-level skills. Each degree can be earned faster or slower depending upon your pre-existing qualifying transfer credits, program of study and course load.

Associate degrees tend to cover more generalized knowledge about an industry while a bachelor's program dives deeper into your field of study. Both degrees are excellent options that can help boost your resume.

With embedded programs at DeVry, you may not have to choose between an associate and a bachelor's. In select programs, you can earn an associate degree while on the path toward pursuing your bachelor’s.2

Is a bachelor’s degree worth it?

According to career outlook data from the BLS, a bachelor’s degree is often required for entry to many occupations in business management, such as in sales and marketing, and in computer and engineering occupations as well. When you look at the figures, it’s easy to see why pursuing a bachelor’s degree can be well worth it.

What can you do with a bachelor’s degree?

A bachelor’s degree can help prepare you for entry-level employment or advancement in your existing career. Whether you’re preparing to pursue your first job or your next, a bachelor’s degree can make you a more competitive candidate. It’s important to keep in mind that, for some positions, a bachelor’s degree is the employer’s minimum education requirement. Once you’ve earned your bachelor’s degree, you can prepare to pursue careers in accounting and finance, software development, healthcare, cyber security and many other fields, depending on the degree you’ve earned and your personal goals.

If you plan to continue your education, your bachelor’s degree is a major step on your way to earning a post-graduate degree, such as a master’s degree or MBA.

What are the requirements to be accepted into a bachelor’s degree program?

Undergraduate degree programs at many universities have similar admissions requirements. To gain admission here at DeVry University, you must meet several general and specific admission requirements, including age, completion of secondary education (such as a high school diploma or equivalency) and proficiency in the basic and prerequisite skills needed for college-level work.
